A Georgia sheriff did not say that the KKK is plotting against blacks

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia said social media posts suggesting white supremacists are planning attacks against Black people are false.

A Facebook from November 1 mail said: “Hey ladies, I just received this from a friend who works at the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s office! Be alert… Last night, a deputy told a family that local white supremacists/KKK members originally from Lexington, North Carolina, are planning to attack between now and the inauguration. They are plotting against black people, especially black women because, in their eyes, we are easy targets. Please be vigilant!

the position and others like it were flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat fake news and misinformation in its News Feed. (Read more about our association with goalowner of Facebook, Instagram and Threads).

The county sheriff’s office northeast of Atlanta said in a Statement of November 2 I had not received such information.

“The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a text thread circulating suggesting possible attacks on African American women ‘between now and the inauguration.’ We have not received any information indicating threats to any group during or after the election day.”

The statement continues: “Hate speech like this is intended to instill fear in the community and prevent us from exercising our constitutional rights. The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office remains dedicated to protecting all citizens and we will continue to monitor and respond accordingly. all suspicious and threatening behavior.”

The sheriff’s office said it will collaborate with other government agencies in the event of any election threats and told the public they could call the agency’s tip line at 770-619-6655.

When the sheriff’s office was contacted on the morning of Election Day, it had no additional information or findings to corroborate the social media message, said Gwinnett Deputy Asia Pagan, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Rockdale County Sheriff Eric J. Levett, Georgia, said November 3 that his office contacted state law enforcement agencies and discovered the social media message was false.

Snopes, a fact-checking websitediscovered that another version of the text message was supposedly from “Councilwoman Wanda Randolph”; It did not say which city council this person served on. We sent a message to a council member by that name in Eatonville, Florida, and did not receive an immediate response.

Nationwide, local election officials have stepped up communications with law enforcement agencies about security on Election Day and in the weeks following as they count ballots and certify results. Several electoral offices have taken additional precautions to provide a safe environment for workers and voters.

But in this case, there is no evidence that the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has said that white supremacists “are planning to attack” Black people “from now until the inauguration.”

We rate this statement Pants on Fire!
