Wright State head coach shared what makes Kentucky so dangerous

One of the best parts of Kentucky’s win over Wright State was the way center Amari Williams played in the win. Williams scored 12 points on 5-6 shooting, along with 13 rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block.

After the game, Wright State head coach Clint Sargent was asked if Williams’ play took him by surprise. The Raiders coach had this to say: “No, you just have to pay close attention to your shooters. He’s dangerous with all those staggers, away screens and ball screens. We really wanted to do a great job taking away threes, which I think they made four in the first half. If you remove three, you disperse and give up. Traditionally this is not how we protect. We want to be in the gaps, but we can’t. I thought he benefited from how we protected all the perimeter action.”

This quote from Wright State’s head coach should excite Kentucky fans because it shows how lethal this offense is. Coaches simply can’t focus on just one player. If they focus on the bigs, it will lead to three open ones. If they focus on stopping shooters, it will open up lanes for Otega Oweh to get to the rim and open up looks for the bigs.

It’s going to be very difficult for opposing teams to prepare for the Wildcats because they can beat a team in so many different ways. It was great to see Mark Pope’s coaching genius on display against Wright State.
