Tyka Nelson, PrinceThe sister of, in addition to being a musician in her own right, died on Monday, November 4, according to He Minnesota star tribune. She was 64 years old.

Nelson’s son, President Nelson, confirmed his death but did not provide the cause. Nelson was Prince’s only full sibling, born two years after his brother on May 18, 1960, to John L. Nelson and Mattie Shaw Nelson.

In the late 1980s, Nelson followed his brother into music and released his first album, royal bluein 1988. That album included his two most successful songs, with “Marc Anthony’s Tune” peaking at No. 33 on the chart. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and “LOVE” peaks at #52.

Nelson released three more albums: Yellow moon, red sky in 1992, a new me in 2008, and Swindler in 2011. This summer, she was scheduled to perform and emcee a retirement concert at the Dakota in Minneapolis, but she became ill before the concert and dropped out (the show continued without her). Nelson also worked closely with Prince during the final years of his life. After the Prince death in 2016Nelson and five half-siblings were named the legitimate heirs to the musician’s property (Prince had he did not leave a will). In the years that followed, Nelson helped excavate Prince’s famous vault discover and preserve archive treasure material that the musician had hidden far away but I hoped that one day be released.

“Prince always wanted people to listen to his music.” Nelson said rolling stone in 2021. “How dare I not do what this man broke his back for his entire life? There was no way he would let a single note of his music go unheard. He wouldn’t let that museum ever open and he wouldn’t let people see what he envisioned. “That man set this disaster in motion and I’m not leaving this planet until I get the whole world to hear every single thing he worked so hard for and kept for the whole world to hear.”

Nelson remained involved in the estate but ultimately decided sell all but two percent of its shares to the Primary Wave management group. (The company also bought out the interests of other heirs, Omarr Baker and the late Alfred Jackson.)

“I’m a tremendously grateful person who had wonderful people in my life,” Nelson told the star tribune about his life and his role in his brother’s life this summer. “I miss his wisdom. If he could, he would travel the world and meet people who love him. I’m kind of the last link to him, for some people. It’s like giving back. As far as I’m concerned, he stayed because they loved his music. Now you made me cry twice. “Don’t do it again.”
