Jamie Carragher has revealed that he feels Alejandro Garnacho could play a deeper role than he is used to, with new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim also having no room for Casemiro.

Amorim is tasked with repairing a Man Utd unit currently 13th in the Premier League. Recent results have been disappointing for a team that used to compete to win the league every season.

The new boss is expected to make a massive restructure, using his favored 3-4-3 formation, which differs greatly from Erik ten Hag’s use of the 4-2-3-1.

Premier League expert Carragher believes the new team will look like this: Andre Onana; Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martínez; Noussair Mazraoui, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Garnacho; Bruno Fernandes, Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford.

That would mean an unknown position for Garnacho, although Carragher explained that in Amorim’s system it is not very different from the full-back role he is accustomed to.

“I go to the setup and almost choose an offensive full-back on one side (Mazraoui) and Garnacho on the other because when you look at their setup at Sporting, these players are asked to be very high as wingers” said in sky sports.

In the team that Carragher expects, the absence of Casemiro, one of United’s highest-earning players, who has played more minutes than both players (Mainoo and Ugarte) expected to assume his role so far this season, stands out.

Berbatov agrees with Garnacho’s new role

Alongside Carragher was former United striker Dimitar Berbatov, who agreed that Garnacho could play as a full-back.

“Yeah, sure,” was his response when asked if he could be used there.

However, he felt captain Fernandes could be used differently to how Carragher sees him.

He stated that the Portuguese attacking midfielder “has the discipline” to play a holding role. With his number 10 role likely not existing in Amorim’s plans, Fernandes will have to shift to the full-back or a deeper midfield position.

Manchester United summary: Amorim loves his players

There has been much talk of Amorim pursuing some of his current Sporting CP players since he was appointed United manager.

Reports also suggest that centre-back Ousmane Diomande is on Amorim’s radar for United.

But it could also weaken Sporting’s competition, with Benfica defender Álvaro Fernández Carreras (for whom United have a buy-back clause) apparently on the radar, after one pundit claimed that “He fears” that Amorim wants him to return to Old Trafford.

Garnacho professional positions

Garnacho has almost always played up front, as a winger.

As such, it would be a big move for him to drop to a deeper position, one he has rarely featured in during his senior career.
