Video of shooting at Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office headquarters

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office released video of an encounter at agency headquarters that resulted in an exchange of gunfire between a man and deputies outside on October 7. The video, edited by the sheriff’s office, was released Monday and shows a strange exchange between the man and deputies, followed by an escalation of events outside.

The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Patrick Bearden. He arrived at the headquarters around 3:00 p.m. with his little daughter. Officers reported that Bearden was visibly agitated and exhibited unusual behavior. They noticed that Bearden was wearing a bulletproof vest while passing by the building’s X-ray station, prompting close surveillance.

Deputy: “Are you armed now?”

Bearden: “Do you want to know?”

As he scooped up his daughter to leave, Bearden appeared to challenge the officers by asking, “Are you feeling uneasy, buddy?”

When Bearden returned to his vehicle, he placed his daughter in the back seat before retrieving the weapons from inside the vehicle, according to authorities.

The video shows him removing the cover of a rifle and raising it in the air before raising his hands.

At that point, officers took everyone inside the building to a secure area. An officer is seen retrieving a ballistic shield and returning outside, where more officers had arrived, one of them pulling a rifle from the back of his truck.

A team approached Bearden and issued verbal commands, fully aware of the child in the car.

The video stops when Bearden reportedly began shooting at officers, but the audio continues with gunshots and officers giving orders.

The officers returned fire and struck Bearden.

He was provided medical assistance at the scene and taken to hospital for treatment.

The child was unharmed and was later handed over to his family, authorities confirmed.

Subsequently, Sheriff Keybo Taylor and command staff representatives consulted with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office regarding the release of the body camera footage. The edited video, with markers added and portions blurred to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, was made public.

The incident remains under investigation by the GBI.
