Jason Kelce breaks silence after smashing Penn State fan’s phone: ‘I chose to greet hate with hate’

Before ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” continued with its usual analysis of the game ahead, it was Jason Kelce’s turn to address him by breaking a State of Pennsylvania phone from a fan on Saturday.

The video quickly went viral in which Kelce reacts when a fan uses a homophobic slur to attack his brother, Travis Kelce, for his relationship with Taylor Swift.

“Hey Kelce, how does it feel that your brother is dating Taylor Swift?” the fan was heard saying in the video.

Kelce then turned to face the fan and smashed his phone, which was apparently recording the incident.

“Monday Night Countdown” host Scott Van Pelt began the show by preparing Kelce’s apology Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium before the Chiefs-Buccaneers game.

“Listen, I think everyone has seen on social media everything that happened this week,” Kelce began. “Listen, I’m not happy with anything that happened. I’m not proud of it, and in a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I just don’t think that’s a productive thing. Don’t really do it. I don’t think it leads to the speech and it is the correct way to approach things. At that moment I fell into a moment that I should not have done.

“So I think the bottom line is that I try to live my life by the golden rule – it’s what I’ve always been taught. I try to treat people with common decency and respect, and I’m going to continue to do that, even though I stayed short this week, I will do it in the future and I will continue to do it.

Kelce was in University Park, Pennsylvania, to appear on ESPN’s “College GameDay” before the Nittany Lions’ game against their Big Ten rival. Ohio State Buckeyes.

There were several people around showing off their phones, trying to interact with Kelce, although they were much nicer than the one fan who decided to hurl the homophobic slur at him.

Despite Kelce’s actions, many on social media defended him. Instead, they found a problem with what the Penn State fan said instead of the phone breaking.

“People are going to comment on Jason Kelce, but the point is there’s no longer any accountability for anything they say,” former Team USA soccer player Taylor Twellman said on X. “The good old days without phones or social networks, what do you think they would have really been? People are losers because of this shit.”

Kelce mentioned on “Monday Night Countdown” that this wasn’t necessarily the platform to go into more detail, so it could appear on his “New Heights” podcast with Travis, which typically releases each week.

Jason Kelce has been emotional in the past when defending his brother, including those who criticized the Chiefs tight end for his slow start to the season.

An excited Jason Kelce was seen talking to his brother about this on the podcast.

“Everything will go your way, especially if you stay the guy you’ve always been, you know what I mean,” Jason Kelce said. “There’s no one I’ve ever played sports with or anyone I’ve been on a team with that I’ve enjoyed being there with Trav more, and I know it’s frustrating for me to watch and have to listen to him.

“But I can’t wait, and we don’t have to put that out there, but I just can’t wait. I can’t wait for it to change.”
