RICHMOND, Va. – A death investigation is underway after a fatal shooting outside the Richmond Sheriff’s Office, Crime Insider sources told CBS 6.

Police responded to a shooting in the parking lot in the 1700 block of Fairfield Way Monday afternoon.

The victim, who Crime Insider sources say is not a city employee, died from his injuries at the scene.

“Shortly after 12 noon, a Richmond Police Department officer was walking toward the Richmond Justice Center in the parking lot when he heard what sounded like a gunshot,” said Richmond police spokesman James Mercante. “He went to investigate and there was an adult male down and unconscious in the corner of the Justice Center parking lot.”

There were other people in the area at the time of the shooting.

“(Detectives) got information from people who were nearby and of course they will collect any video,” Mercante said. “There is no suspect in custody at this time. They have some information to go on.”
