Scammers Step Up Their Scam With Fake Arrest Warrant

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Brown County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about another intimidation scam.

We know that scams are becoming more elaborate every day and we do not want you to fall for this new twist of the “deputy scam” or the “jury scam.”

It’s a fake arrest warrant. A fake officer is using a fake arrest warrant to threaten the target with a fake felony charge.

The one we saw is for not showing up for jury duty.

The sheriff’s office says someone received it as a text message, which is definitely a red flag (the sheriff’s office won’t text you about an impending arrest). Keep an eye out for this in your email or on social media.

In this case, the arrest document makes the scam more intimidating and even credible.

It is also signed by a judge, which is not a real signature.

You will never be contacted this way about an actual arrest warrant, you will never be asked to pay money (that’s up to the courts to deal with), and there will never be threatening language to get you to appear.

The fake Arrest Warrant contains some errors (spelling it “Browm” County is the most obvious) and the document is outdated, but it can be a little scary if you receive it and make you too anxious to notice some of these things.

If you are ever concerned or have questions about receiving a warrant this way, call the sheriff’s office.

Reporting things like this, or any scam, helps ensure that neither you nor anyone else falls victim.
