Early voting ends at DMV, final results may take days to be confirmed

Early voting has concluded at the DMV and now polls on Election Day will open in approximately 24 hours.

A big question many people have is when they will know who will win. 7News On Your Side is taking a close look at how long it will take to count the votes.

Four years ago, a record number of mail-in and early votes due to the pandemic caused significant slowdowns in vote counting and the reporting of election results. The final figures took days to be known.

Election officials believe there’s a chance we won’t know the outcome of the presidential race (and possibly not even control of Congress) on election night. According to the Associated Press, Virginia counts votes faster than many other states. In 2020, about 71% of total votes cast were reported before midnight.

In Maryland, history shows that counting has been incredibly slow. In 2020, about 8% of total votes cast were reported before midnight. A new law was passed last year to speed up the pre-processing of ballots, which could make a difference.

And finally, in the District of Columbia, a large percentage of voters cast their ballots by mail.

Ballots postmarked by Election Day will be counted if they arrive by November 11. In 2020, about 55 percent of total votes cast were reported before midnight.

Polls in Maryland and DC close at 8 pm and in Virginia they close an hour earlier.

Recent elections have been marred by conspiracy theories, misinformation and violent attacks. Trust has become a major concern.

Election officials in at least four states reported that ballots were damaged or compromised over the past week. More than ever, DMV voters are looking to keep track of ballots.

At least 33 states and the District have a ballot correction process in which officials must immediately inform voters that their ballot is being rejected.

In the District, if there is a problem with a mail-in ballot, the voter will receive a letter specifying the problem. The voter can sign the certificate included with the initial letter which can be returned by mail or email.

The voter will have up to seven days to complete the ballot. In Virginia, within three days of finding an incomplete or incorrect ballot, the registrar will notify the voter in writing or by email of the error or failure and provide information on how to correct the problem.

A clerk in Maryland will notify the voter of the rejection as soon as possible and, if there is enough time, either send a new ballot if the original ballot was received by mail or attempt to contact the voter.
