    It takes a painstaking process of several months to put together the Melbourne Cup field, but it has finally been narrowed down to the 24 horses that will compete for Australian racing’s top prize in 2024.

    This year’s field includes French rider Vauban, who competed in last year’s Melbourne Cup and sits at the top weight after finishing 14th as one of the favourites. His stablemate, also trained by Willie Mullins, Absurde also returns after finishing seventh.

    After finishing second in this year’s Caufield Cup, 2024 favorite Buckaroo cleared a wide barrier, No. 21.

    Leading Australian trainer Chris Waller has five runners in this year’s Melbourne Cup, in addition to Buckaroo he has entered Kovalica, Land Legend, Valiant King and Manzoice. He could have had another one after choosing not to race dominant Cox Plate winner Via Sistina.

    Caulfield Cup winning trainer Ciaron Maher has Circle of Fire, Okita Soushi, Interpretation and Saint George.

    Once again this is an international event, with 20 of the 24 runners coming from overseas, including France, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan and New Zealand.

    This year it is a very light weight field, with Vauban at the top weight at 55.5kg, while there are eight horses at the bottom of the leaderboard at 50kg.
