Man killed in Eau Claire shooting was a firefighter

EAU CLAIRE, Mich. (WNDU) – The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim and suspect in a deadly shooting early Saturday morning in Eau Claire.

Officers were called shortly before 12:45 a.m. to the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street.

When they arrived, they say they found two male victims. One of them was unresponsive and suffered life-threatening injuries, and the other had non-life-threatening injuries.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where one of them later died. The victim has since been identified as Chad Medlin, 36, of Benton Harbor.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office tells us Medlin was an Eau Claire firefighter. The Eau Claire Fire Department also confirmed that in a Facebook post.

“Today is a sad day for our department. We lost a friend. A fellow firefighter. Someone who served his country,” said Eau Claire Fire Department Chief Nor Carl. “We will do the job because that is who we are and that is what you would want us to be. But each step will be a little more difficult. Take care of us brother, Chad Medlin, we’ll take it from here.”

Police say they were able to quickly identify Rigoberto Gomez, 47, of Eau Claire, as a suspect with the help of witnesses. Gomez was arrested and booked into the Berrien County Jail on multiple charges.
