TOAhead of the US presidential election on November 5, in which Republican candidate Donald Trump will face Democratic candidate Kamala Harris at the polls, millions of Americans have chosen to cast their vote early. At the time of publication, 76 million people have cast their early vote.

All but three US states and the District of Columbia offer early voting options, and both the Republican and Democratic Parties actively encourage early voting among their supporters. A record number of votes have been cast in certain battlefield states. According to Rachael Cobb, an associate professor of political science and legal studies at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, early voting has important benefits for both campaigns and voters.

With in-person early voting, she emphasizes that voters can go and receive all the support they need from poll workers.

“(Voters) can see that everything is handled with their own eyes,” Cobb says. It also emphasizes how convenient early voting is, as it often allows people to vote at centers close to their work or home, without affecting their busy schedules too much.

Despite increased participation in the electoral system, election officials in several different states have reported damaged and destroyed ballot boxes.

Amid the tight race between Harris and Trump, voters may want to check and see if their ballot for the 2024 presidential election has been processed. Whether the vote was cast by mail or absentee ballot, several states have online databases through which citizens can enter their personal information, such as their name, date of birth and ZIP code, and see if their ballot has been counted. However, some states note that a voter’s mail-in ballot could take some time to appear in their respective databases.

As for people casting their ballot in person, certain states also have options for voters to track their provisional ballot if they decide to go in person for early voting. Some allow these voters to enter personal information online to see if their provisional ballot has been counted. If a voter’s state or county does not have this option, They can still use the national hotline: 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) to check the status of their provisional ballot in person.

According to Charles Stewart, a professor of political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, if a vote is cast in person, “there is no need” for voters to follow the ballot as they see it enter the ballot box. . Campaigns are more likely to be the ones trying to verify in-person voting.

“In presidential battleground states or anywhere else where there is a close election, it is usually the parties and campaigns that do the work of notifying people about their presidential ballot and working to get them involved and fixing (any ) problem,” Stewart tells TIME.

There are three states absent from the list above as they do not offer online ballot tracking. Although Illinois does not have its own state website to check the status of mail-in ballots, certain counties, such as Will County and Macoupin Countydo. Check your county clerk’s specific website and more information should be available there.

Missouri also has no statewide online mechanism to help voters view the status of their mail-in ballot. But, depending on where voters live, tracking still occurs at the local level. Kansas City and Saint Louis Both have implemented their own online ballot tracking systems. Voters without online tracking systems can call their local elections office to obtain information about whether their ballot has been received.

In Wyoming, citizens should contact their local county clerkwho can share with them if their ballot was received.

Meanwhile, in California, the process depends on the county in which you vote. Some counties require voters to call their elections office. The numbers for each office are listed on the state website.

Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Arizona are among the states that have their own separate databases for provisional ballots. Ohio and Florida, on the other hand, have their own state hotlines (OHIO-VOTE (866-644-6868) and 833-868-3331 respectively) where voters can call and ask about the status of their provisional ballot.
