Tree planting event aims to boost biodiversity

Residents in an area of ​​Surrey have been invited to join a community tree planting event to create new habitats.

From 10:00 GMT until 12:00 on November 30, a variety of young trees, including crabapples, hawthorns, wild cherry, walnut, chestnut and pigeon trees, will be planted at Grovelands Recreation Ground in West Molesey.

Ashley Tilling, Elmbridge Council’s cabinet member for climate change, environmental services and sustainability, said: “By planting a wide range of trees, we are not only improving biodiversity, but we are also creating a healthier and more vibrant ecosystem for for future generations to enjoy.”

Tools will be available to borrow so anyone can participate in the event.

The council’s portfolio holder for leisure, culture and business strategy, Simon Waugh, said: “This event is a fantastic opportunity for residents to come together, enjoy the outdoors and help us make the recreation ground a welcoming place. and nice to spend time outdoors.

In early 2024, the council launched an action fund for projects that helped address the impact of climate change.

Up to £5,000 was available for each group to apply for through the new Elmbridge Community Climate Action Fund.
