Construction begins on new affordable housing development in northeast Calgary

An affordable housing project is being built in northeast Calgary.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Friday morning in Whitehorn.

Construction has started on a new affordable housing development in north east Calgry.

The Homespace Society Project will see transitional townhouses built for 52 vulnerable families.

There will be two- and three-bedroom units in seven buildings.

The units will be available for families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. They will be rented at a price 30 percent below the market price.

The development is part of the city’s housing strategy that council approved in 2023, after a two-day public hearing in which more than 100 Calgarians shared their housing struggles.
