Moscow has warned the United States that it should take Russia’s nuclear warnings seriously to avoid World War III.

Dmitry Medvedev, vice chairman of Russia’s Security Council and the country’s president from 2008 to 2012, warned the United States on Saturday that it was “a mistake” to believe “that the Russians will never cross a certain line.”

He told Russian state broadcaster RT that Moscow believed the current American and European political establishments lacked the “foresight and mental subtlety” displayed by the late Henry Kissinger.

Russia has been signaling to the West for weeks that Moscow will respond if the United States and its allies help Ukraine fire longer-range missiles toward Russia.

US diplomats have previously said that Washington is not seeking to escalate the war in Ukraine.

It is not the first time that Medvedev has warned of a serious escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

In September, he threatened that Ukraine’s incursion into the Russian territory of Kursk had given Russia formal grounds to use nuclear weapons.

It comes as Ukraine’s capital kyiv became the target of an overnight airstrike that lasted until midday today and left one person injured, city officials said. All the drones had been shot down.
