UAW President Shawn Fain rallies in Detroit for Kamala Harris in last-ditch effort before Election Day

UAW President Shawn Fain met with union members in Detroit on Friday and local lawmakers hoped to get the vote done.

Fain says this upcoming election is what will define this generation. He spoke to a crowd of hundreds at the union’s Solidarity House.

“It’s the working class that built this country. And on Tuesday, when we defeat Donald Trump and deal another blow to the billionaire class, it will be because you achieved that victory,” Fain told the crowd. “In the UAW and in our union movement, our response to hate and division is simple, our response is solidarity. If we stand united, we will never lose.”

There was a who’s who of the Democratic Party and lawmakers took to the podium for a final vote for some 370,000 active UAW members.

Meanwhile, a familiar face from the Bronx was the tone of the night. The very progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was in town urging voters to go to the polls. During his stop, he took time to criticize former President Donald Trump’s probing comments about Detroit in October.

“We heard it from Trump saying, oh, what’s going to happen? Is the world going to be like Detroit? Of course it is,” AOC said. “I would love to be a place that houses the strongest, fighting union in the United States of America.”

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson spoke with a large UAW badge on her jacket. She delivered a message to not let any type of intimidation or scaremongering stop anyone from casting their vote on Tuesday. He assured once again that there will be fair elections in Michigan and said that all eyes in the country and even the world are watching.

“This week alone has been filled with so much smear and misinformation, all designed to discourage us from participating or believing in our own voices,” Benson said. “We will stand up to anyone, anywhere, anytime, who tries to stand in the way of our rights and freedoms.”

Representatives Debbie Dingell and Rashida Tlaib were present. Tlaib would not endorse Kamala Harris at the rally, but instead told voters to focus on all races, not just the presidential one.
