A man accused of kidnapping a woman and her four children at gunpoint after allegedly killing a man in Minnesota was in custody Friday morning, and the victims were reported safe, local and state officials said.

Chad Aanerud, 35, was detained during a traffic stop around 7:15 a.m. local time after a white minivan was stopped in Morrison County, the Minnesota The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) of the Department of Public Safety and local authorities said.

The county, in the east-central part of the state, is directly south of Crow Wing County, where authorities reported the woman and her children were abducted shortly after 1:50 a.m. Friday.

The victims, whom police identified as the man’s girlfriend, 33, and his four children, ages 3, 7, 11 and 14, were found safe in the vehicle, according to the Crow County Sheriff’s Office Wing, the agency that reported the family missing. , prompting a statewide Amber Alert.

“There is no threat to the public at this time,” Sheriff Eric Klang told USA TODAY Friday morning. “Officers continue to work on this case and will update you as the investigation develops.”

A shooting, the kidnapping of a family and a fire in a house

Before the kidnapping, authorities said, Aanerud allegedly shot and killed a man at a home in Maple Grove Township, before setting it on fire and kidnapping the five victims at gunpoint.

The sheriff’s office identified the man shot to death as 62-year-old Lyle Maske.

It was not immediately known if the suspect knew Maske or if Maske knew the Amber Alert victims, but police said Friday they believed the kidnapping and shooting were related.

According to information from the sheriff’s office, the family was taken from a house where they were staying near the city ​​of brainerdabout 130 miles northwest of Minneapolis.

Authorities said that around 1:50 a.m. Friday, Aanerud arrived at the home in the 15000 block of Loerch Road where the victims were staying and fired a rifle at the ceiling.

At some point, Aanered shot the victim to death, forced the mother and her four children to leave with him in a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, and burned the house.

As of Friday morning, police had not released additional information about the murder and kidnapping.

The sheriff’s office said both the shooting and the kidnapping remained under investigation.
