Five Patriots who could be traded before the NFL trade deadline

Here’s a look at five Patriots players who could be traded before Tuesday.

WR Kendrick Bourne

Bourne has already heard his name appear in trade rumors several times this year, whether in the summer during the Brandon Aiyuk Giveaway or even earlier this month in more rumors surrounding the 49ers.

Bourne, 29, the elder statesman in New England’s receiver room, has established himself as a reliable receiver during his time with the Patriots.

Bourne had 37 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns in eight games last season before suffering a torn ACL in a road game against the Dolphins.

He’s been slow from the start this season while recovering from that knee injury (4 catches, 29 yards in four games), but Bourne is a solid receiver who could be coveted by teams in need of pass catchers.

Any team acquiring Bourne would also have some security, as Bourne signed a three-year deal worth up to $33 million last offseason.

Ultimately, any deal involving Bourne will revolve around how high a draft pick the Patriots could get, as well as whether or not the team is comfortable moving a veteran out of a very young receiver room.

DT Davon Godchaux

Another Patriots regular who has seen his name come up in trade rumors involving the 49ers, Davon Godchaux has been one of the few bright spots on New England’s disappointing defense in 2024.

The 29-year-old nose tackle has been a consistent run blocker for years in New England, routinely closing gaps and running down the lane at the line of scrimmage.

Godchaux, who signed a two-year, up to $21 million contract extension earlier this year, could be an attractive option for a San Francisco roster playing without manager Javon Hargrave (torn triceps).

Godchaux sidelined trade talks earlier this week.

“Yes, I was surprised, but at the end of the day, this is a business.” Godchaux told Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald after New England victory 25-22 over the Jets. “I mean, (expletive) happens all the time. I’m sure some think they could be on the team for a long time and something happens. This is the business of the NFL. This is what we signed up for.”

Although Godchaux’s production and contract could make him one of the top options on the trade market, New England would lose a respected veteran from its locker room, further hampering a run defense that has given up 150 rushing yards in three of its last four games.

CB Jonathan Jones

Jones is in the same boat as Godchaux and Bourne. The veteran cornerback has winning pedigree (two Super Bowl titles) and speed that many contenders would love to add to their secondary before the trade deadline.

But would the return be enough for a Patriots team that also values the leadership Jones offers on a very young and still malleable defense?

Again, it could come down to what kind of draft compensation the Patriots are looking for with a player like Jones, who has recorded three passes defended and 28 tackles in eight games this season.

A defensively struggling but Super Bowl hopeful team like the Ravens makes a lot of sense for a tenacious cornerback like Jones, who can play both in the slot and on the outside.

But is it worth moving Jones to New England if all he gets is another fifth or sixth round pick?

WR KJ Osborn

This seems obvious, especially after Osborn already addressed the trade rumors. revolving around him last week.

Despite averaging 52.7 receptions, 615 receiving yards and five touchdowns per season over the past three years with the Vikings, Osborn has failed to make much of an impact with New England, recording just seven receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown.

With rookie Javon Baker potentially in line for a larger role moving forward, the Patriots could opt to give Osborn a fresh start elsewhere while also making room in the wide receiver room.

WR Tyquan Thornton

Like Osborn, the Patriots may want to cut bait with Thornton, especially if it creates more room on the roster to elevate younger players or add talent at the deadline.

Despite Thornton’s speed and high draft pedigree (50th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft), he failed to make it with the Patriots.

While the TCU product’s straight-line acceleration would seemingly make him an attractive target for a strong-armed quarterback like Drake Maye, he caught just four passes for 47 yards in 2024 and threw a Maye dart during the team’s win. Sunday over the Jets.

New England has Thornton was reportedly dangling in trade talks for more than a month.although it remains unlikely that the Patriots will land a premium pick for a player who has struggled during his three seasons in Foxborough.
