Unai Emery’s press conference: preview of Tottenham vs Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke to the media ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Tottenham (kick-off 14:00 GMT).

These are the key lines from his press conference:

  • The Villa manager began his speech by sending his condolences to Valencia, where the floods have caused the death of more than 200 people: “I want to send my condolences. We had a tragedy in Valencia, I am very sad. All my deepest condolences to the affected people and the families of the victims. I hope they can recover quickly from everything that happened there.”

  • Emery gave the latest team news: “We only had one injured player and that’s Ross Barkley. He has a small injury, but he won’t be available for the next two weeks.”

  • Emery expressed his sympathy for former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, while stating that new manager Ruben Amorim deserves the job: “I don’t think Ten Hag’s sacking is a good thing, but this is football. Amorim I know him He “He is doing a very good job in Portugal at Sporting Lisbon and if Manchester United decided to hire him it is because he deserves it.”

  • Ahead of facing Tottenham, with Villa fourth in the Premier League standings, Emery insists he is not looking beyond Sunday’s game: “With my experiences, when I think about the next game, I make a mistake. My focus is on The next game and I’m just thinking about this. Sometimes I make plans for the next few weeks or months, but I want to learn from experiences. I tell my players to try to focus on the next game. The best to play the game against Tottenham. “For me, the focus is on the game against Tottenham. In every game we play, we try to identify our corrections, our mistakes, our process and we are analyzing how we are now and how they are, with the players they have.”
