Sydney reacts to inspiring new film

Ahead of the Indigenous Round at Henson Park, the Sydney Swans AFLW team took part in a screening of the powerful story.

On October 17, after six years of filming, an Australian-produced film will be released. like my brother was released in theaters.

Directed by Sal Balharrie and Danielle MacLean, the film captivates viewers across the country as it follows four Indigenous women in their fight for the AFLW.

Originally from the Tiwi Islands, a small community off the coast of Darwin, Rina, Freda, Juliana and Jess embark on a life-changing journey to Melbourne, Victoria. They break conventions, explore unexplored territories and put their small home on the map of elite sport.

On Tuesday, ahead of Week 2 of the Indigenous Round, the Sydney Swans AFLW team attended a screening of the new film.

Speaking to Sydney Swans Media, the players shared their reactions to the powerful story.

Product of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy Holly Cooper I had the opportunity to play against the Tiwi Islands in a competition in Darwin when I was a junior.

“I thought the film was really good and it was great to see them get the opportunity to come to Melbourne,” Cooper shared.

“When I went to play in Darwin, I recognized a lot of talent with hands and feet.”

During the six years of production, the Swans defender Maddy Collier was filmed playing VFL in the 2018 and 2019 off-season for the feature film.

“I actually met those girls and they’re amazing, they have weird talents,” Collier reflected.

“I think, for me, the main thing is that we are very lucky in the position we are in. We have incredible facilities and practically everything within our reach.

“There are many people, especially in remote communities like the Tiwi Islands, who do not have the same access. “It’s important to raise awareness and help those communities be seen.”
