Hospitality experts analyze impact of federal policy on Florida workforce

Florida hotels already generate a $121 billion impact to the state each year, something that could increase dramatically as more resorts begin construction.

Does the state have the workforce to support that growth? How will foreign workers fit into the staffing of Florida hospitality companies in the future?

South Florida hospitality industry experts discussed the economics of the industry at a Florida Tax Watch event in Palm Beach. Leaders discussed how policies could shape the future of one of the state’s largest economic forces.

John Jarradlobby director of the American Hotel and Lodging AssociationAt the federal level, the industry continues to push to streamline the process to allow foreign workers to work in the U.S. At the same time, industry leaders want to develop more talent domestically, he said.

“Our association just donated a few days ago about a million dollars to more than 360 students from all over the country who are interested in advancing their career and obtaining a degree, hopefully in the hospitality program,” said.

But on the other side of the employment spectrum, Jarrad said his team is pushing the federal government to streamline a number of visa programs “so that we can continue to try to attract more people who want to work in this country for an extended period of time.” “. time, as we continue to try to find some creative solutions from a workforce standpoint in our own industry.”

Milton SegarraPresident and CEO of Discover the Palm BeachesHe said the local program attempts to ensure that partner resorts and hotels are not dependent on illegal human trafficking into the country.

“Florida is a mandatory state for human trafficking training when it comes to hotel employees,” he said. “That’s something we take very seriously. “It’s something we continue to take very seriously.”

Gopal Rajegowdaexecutive vice president of Related RossHe also discussed the impact of planning on tourism. He also analyzed how the construction of hotels is generating other opportunities in commerce in the region.

“There is now an opportunity for a downtown tech hub to evolve, but again, all of that infrastructure, that convention, is absolutely critical to continuing to grow,” he said. “So we spend a lot of time outside of our remit thinking about the important components that make cities thrive.”
