A man has been charged with allegedly trying to smuggle about 25kg of methamphetamine into Australia from Thailand, Australian authorities said.

The 38-year-old man was detained at Sydney airport when he arrived on a flight on Monday.

He has been described as having dual citizenship between the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Australian Border Force (ABF) officers searched the man’s suitcase and bag and allegedly located about 25 packages, each containing one kilogram of white powder.

Preliminary tests returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers subsequently arrested and charged the man with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.

He appeared at Downing Center Local Court in Sydney on Tuesday and is expected to appear in court on January 8, 2025.
