Deaths on Montgomery County roads continue to rise. Is Vision Zero working?

7News was at one of the most dangerous intersections in Montgomery County: US Route 29 and University Blvd in Silver Spring.

Vision Zero was designed to eliminate serious injuries and fatal crashes on county roads by 2030.

7News dug into the latest numbers, which show there were 45 fatal crashes in 2023 in Montgomery County. This year there have already been 41 fatal accidents.

“Being over 40 years old is very concerning for us,” Holland said.

Residents who live near dangerous intersections in Montgomery County, such as Georgia Avenue and University Boulevard, or Georgia Avenue between Bel Pre and Randolph Roads, are also concerned.

“I’ve seen police chases around here… There were a few times where I saw someone get hit,” said Ransford Moses, a Montgomery County resident.

We asked Vision Zero coordinator Wade Holland, “Given all the changes that have been implemented to make intersections safer and we are still on track to have more deaths this year than last year, will the (Vision Zero) program work ?

“I would say the program is working, and the difficult thing is that with our program we can only do a limited number of roads and intersections each year. It is a long process to overcome it,” he responded.

7News also asked Holland, “What is the county doing to better address reducing deaths on Montgomery County roads?”

He told us the county is pushing lawmakers in Annapolis to install more speed cameras and is working to increase the number of sidewalks on Veirs Mill Road and along Rockville Pike.

Holland said the federal “Safe Streets and Roads for All” program is also helping the county meet its Vision Zero goals.
