Everyone escapes alarming Jefferson County apartment fire unharmed

VESTAVIA HILLS, Alabama (WBRC) – We’re learning more about how firefighters saved neighbors who were burned from their homes at an apartment complex in Vestavia Hills. They also receive help from the Red Cross.

Eight units were damaged by a fire at the Kreekview apartment complex Tuesday night. Fortunately, no one suffered serious injuries.

Rocky Ridge Deputy Fire Chief Michael Bartlett says they could see the flames from afar and once they stopped, they immediately went into action.

“Upon arrival, we saw strong flames showing in front, behind and through the roof. The entire second floor of the apartment building was on fire,” Deputy Chief Bartlett said.

He says they helped a man out of the building and that freed all the occupants. Firefighting efforts then began, during which they discovered two cats and reunited them with their families.

As for the cause of the fire, crews are still investigating.

“I have no idea at the moment. Our fire chief is there today doing the investigation, so we should know something in the next few days,” Bartlett said.

Firefighters not only helped put out the flames. They also called the American Red Cross to request help for the 12 impacted. Annette Rowland with the American Red Cross says social workers were on site Tuesday night helping everyone who lost their home.

“People were affected. They are suffering and need some support. So our team showed up in an hour and a half to be on the ground providing financial assistance, providing resources for people and you have to determine the next steps and what that recovery will look like,” Rowland said.

She says now is the time to check your house for fire hazards, make sure your outlets aren’t overloaded, and that none of your electrical cords are faulty. This effort could make a big difference.
