Dave the Diver developer confirms story DLC is in the works and talks about spinoffs for each character

It’s been almost two years since Dave the Diver first surfaced and immediately dazzled the world with his signature underwater exploration/sushi restaurant management charms, but developer Mintrocket isn’t done yet; the studio has now confirmed that a story expansion is on the way, and perhaps even spin-off games for each of Dave’s friends.

That’s according to Dave the Diver creator and director Jaeho Hwang, who shared the news with VGC at the recent Gamescom Asia in Singapore. “I want to expand Dave the Diver IP myself,” he explained the studio’s future plans. “I think this is every director’s dream because we have a recognizable character.” Hwang (who is also CEO of Mintrocket) added that while the base game “didn’t really delve deeply into the personal stories in Dave the Diver, because we wanted to keep the game very casual,” he’s looking to flesh out some of those. blanks.

It seems like some of that will happen in “the story that the DLC (Mintrocket) is currently working on,” but Hwang said he also wants to make “separate games about each character to show how they met, what they did before they go to the blue hole.” He noted that there is already a precedent for this, albeit in reverse, as the backstory of Dave the Diver character Cobra is technically told in Evil Factory, one of Hwang’s previous games.

Hwang added spinoffs that focus on different characters and could give the studio a chance to explore new genres within the Dave the Diver universe, and perhaps revisit Dave the Diver at a time in his life when he has a different profession had. “He’s always been a diver,” he continued, “so we really didn’t think about how to move with Dave…I really want to show how he grew up, and how he became a diver, and how he ended up on the way to the Blue Hole.”

So far, Dave the Diver – which has sold over 4 million copies since launching last year – has received three pieces of post-launch DLC: the Digital Extra expansion includes various cosmetics, plus a digital art book and soundtrack, as well as a free Dredge collaboration and another focused on Godzilla. Hawng didn’t give any hint as to when Mintrocket might be ready with Dave the Diver’s story DLC, but it should be the perfect excuse to revisit an already great game.

“Healthy, harmonious and absolutely unwilling to settle,” describes Eurogamer Dave the Diver in our five-star review, “this is one of the most generous games in years.”
