Vietnam has deemed the extradition of a terrorist from Thailand, who was behind the deadly attacks in Vietnam, “appropriate” to ensure that all criminals are held accountable under the law.

“Y Quynh Bdap was behind the recruitment, incitement and teaching of the terrorist attack on June 11, 2023 in Dak Lak province, which had serious consequences,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang said during a press conference on Thursday.

“This person was tried in court and sentenced by the Dak Lak People’s Court to 10 years in prison for terrorism.”

Hang emphasized that the extradition of Y Quynh Bdap to Vietnam is in line with legal proceedings and ensures that every criminal is subjected to justice. Vietnamese authorities will continue to work with their Thai counterparts to address the issue in accordance with the laws of both countries, she added.

On January 20, the Dak Lak People’s Court convicted several individuals involved in the 2023 terrorist attacks on the headquarters of Ea Ktur and Ea Tieu communes, which resulted in the deaths of nine officials and civilians. Y Quynh Bdap was one of six convicts who fled abroad and have been in Thailand since 2018. He was arrested by Thai authorities on June 11 for allegedly overstaying his visa.

The Bangkok court approved Vietnam’s request for the extradition of Y Quynh Bdap on September 30, Thai media reported. He remains in custody in Bangkok and the Thai government has 90 days to carry out the extradition.
