Paytm apologizes after criticism of CEO Vijay Shekar Sharma’s controversial ‘Ok Tata Bye Bye’ post

Paytm on Friday apologized for a controversial social media post by CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma on the death of industrialist Ratan Tata. The post, which has since been deleted, faced backlash as it was seen as insensitive and inappropriate in tone.

“We deeply regret the pain caused by a recent report regarding Mr. Ratan Tata. His passing is a great loss to the nation and we are truly saddened,” the digital payments platform said in a post on social media platform

The message further read, “The integrity, compassion and kindness exemplified by Mr. Tata have left a deep mark on every Indian. He will always be cherished in our hearts and his remarkable legacy will continue to guide us. India’s Ratna, India’s legend forever.”

This is what Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma posted

Sharma’s first message contained the phrase “Ok Tata Bye Bye”, a well-known slogan often seen on the back of trucks in India. Many people felt it was disrespectful when it was used in reference to Tata’s death, leading to online backlash. Sharma was widely criticized for his choice of words and perceived insensitivity.

“A legend that will inspire every generation. Next generation entrepreneurs will miss interacting with India’s most humble businessman. Greetings, sir. Ok Tata Bye Bye,” Sharma wrote in his post.

In response to the widespread criticism, Sharma deleted the post. He also shared photos of himself with Ratan Tata and reposted several images shared by Paytm and other X users.

One user commented, “It must have been written by an intern,” implying that it was poorly composed. Another commented: “They never miss an opportunity to make headlines,” while a third commented: “This is inappropriate.”

The last rites of Ratan Naval Tata were held with full state honors at a crematorium in Mumbai yesterday afternoon. Home Minister Amit Shah was present on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently participating in the ASEAN-India and East Asia Summits in Laos. Modi, who paid tribute to Tata the previous evening, described him as “an extraordinary human being.”
