The 71-year-old man who pleaded guilty in the Hilo hit-and-run crash has been released from jail

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 71-year-old man who pleaded guilty in a fatal hit-and-run in Hilo is now out of jail.

Carlton Inada spent a year behind bars and will now serve four years of probation under the terms of his plea deal.

Inada struck and killed Barbara Klein, a 79-year-old aikido instructor on a recumbent bicycle, in October 2023.

In exchange for pleading guilty to negligent homicide, prosecutors dropped the leaving-the-scene charge, which carried a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Inada must also undergo a mental health assessment and submit to electronic monitoring.
