We have helped countries in need without any conditions: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted India’s timely financial assistance to neighboring countries and highlighted its no-strings-attached support during a discussion on “Bretton Woods Institutions at 80: Priorities for the Next Decade” in Washington DC. She contrasted India’s approach with that of global institutions, underscoring India’s commitment to helping the Global South, without saying much about it.

During the discussion about Bretton Woods at 80: priorities for the next decadeUnion Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: “…Much before the IMFs (International Monetary Fund) of the world reached some countries near us…we have come out in time to help countries in need without any conditions attached. In typical eastern fashion, I will not mention the country, I will not mention the amounts of money given, because they are very important for my cultural values and also for my neighborhood. Much before the nimble institutions of the Bretton Woods got there, this money has already been used, because we are closer to them. We extend a line of credit, a line of credit with high discounts, to build the institutions, bridges, ports, railway stations and secretaries, and many of them are unable to repay. We will still continue to do this because we believe the Global South will be behind us. We want to help them. We want them all to have a chance….”
