Judge denies bail reduction for man charged in Smith County dogfighting operation

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A judge has denied a bond reduction for a man charged in an animal cruelty case involving a dog fighting operation in Smith County.

Kerry Jones, 34, and Michael Jones, 31, They were arrested on charges related to dog fighting after 60 dogs and two cats were seized from a Tyler property on September 9.

A bond reduction hearing for Michael Jones was held Tuesday in Smith County Court. His mother, Brenda, took the stand today. She testified that the dogs belonged to Michael’s brother, Kerry. He also faces charges.

Brenda called Michael “caretaker” and says he took care of her puppies. At one point, he tried to make the fifth argument when asked about dog fighting.

Judge Debbie Gunter informed him that Fifth Amendment rights do not apply to witnesses.
