In the electoral victory, Trump’s achievements went beyond the battlefields

President-elect Trump He defeated six highly competitive states in his election victory last week. But his gains among voters were not limited to the battlefields.

Trump improved his vote share across the country, starting in conservative areas but spreading to deeply Democratic states.

It is a critical part of the history of this choice: one in which Trump built a broader coalition and led on two defining campaign issues.

DONALD TRUMP ELECTED AS NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES

Trump won in the battlegrounds and beyond, including traditionally Democratic areas.

Trump won all seven battleground states. He obtained 1.8 points in Michigan and Pennsylvania1.4 points in Georgialittle more than a point in North Carolinaand under a point in Wisconsin.

(Trump’s biggest gains are currently in Nevada and arizona, two of ten states where significant votes remain to be counted.)

But Trump’s best performances relative to 2020 came in reliably Democratic states. These states voted Democratic, but by narrower margins than before.

His biggest improvement was in New Yorkwhere the former and future president won 6.4 points.

Their gains at the county level extended across the state, but notably included improvement in all five new york city districts (where, again, there are some votes left to count).

EARLY VOTES EXCEED 84 MILLION IN THE 2024 ELECTIONS

It also recorded a 5-point improvement in the neighboring New Jerseyenough to reduce the margin of their defeat to just 5.5 points. This is the best performance by a Republican candidate in more than three decades.

Look for New Jersey and Virginia (Trump +2.4 from 2020) become a focal point in future elections, starting with next year’s gubernatorial races.

Trump also got more votes in Illinois (Trump +4.2 from 2020); Another Democratic state with a highly populated urban area.

And as some pre-election polls predicted, the president-elect obtained another five points of votes in Floridawhere Democrats fought hard for a victory just two cycles ago.

Just as he improved in the battlegrounds and left-leaning states, he also made strong gains in states like Texas, Tennessee, South Carolina and Idaho. Trump posted a 3-point improvement in those four conservative states, with smaller improvements in more than a dozen others.

In fact, as of this writing, there is not a single state in the country where Trump has performed weaker than he did four years ago.

Harris’ achievements are limited to a handful of disparate areas

So far, Harris has only surpassed President Biden’s vote share in one state: Utah, where it gained 0.6 points since the last elections.

But even in utah, Trump also performed about one point better than in 2020. It is the third-party candidates who saw the most erosion. (And there are many ballots left to count).

To find positives for Harris, you have to look at some counties across the country.

The vice president scored between 2 and 9 points better in some counties in the Georgia metropolitan area, led by Henry, Rockdale and Douglas.

He also improved in some of the North Carolina counties hardest hit by Hurricane Helene, particularly Democratic-leaning Buncombe, but also Henderson and Transylvania. He posted a gain of about 4 points on each.

Kaufman County, in the dallas suburbs, He also bucked the national trend. That Texas The county swung about 6 points toward Harris.

AMERICANS WANT TO SEE TRUMP ADDRESS THE ECONOMY AND INFLATION UPON RETURN TO THE WHITE HOUSE

Harris posted a modest gain in Chaffee County, Coloradoalso known as the “Heart of the Rockies” (there are some notable ballots here too).

And there are signs that parts of Oregon and Washington could end up being more Democratic than 2020 when counting is complete.

These are the exceptions to a clear rule: Voters have moved almost uniformly away from Democrats this cycle.

Trump created a broader coalition and led on the two main issues

He Fox News Voter Analysis shows that Trump’s achievements came from multiple groups and that voters preferred him on two defining issues.

like him The Voting Unit writes:

Trump’s victory was driven by his strength on the economy and immigration, two of voters’ top concerns. He was seen as a stronger leader than Harris in a time of upheaval, and voters remembered his presidency more fondly than their assessments of the current administration. Trump increased his ratings among his base while reducing traditional Democratic advantages among black, Hispanic and young voters.
