Mobile man becomes first of six defendants to plead guilty to murder of 14-year-old in 2022

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Monday morning, a Mobile man pleaded guilty in connection with a shooting that left a 14-year-old boy dead.

Kelvin Estell, 25, is the first of six defendants to plead guilty to murder, according to prosecutors.

On February 15, 2022, Daniel Blackmon was shot and killed at a home on Cheshire Drive.

Police said Blackmon was standing in front of the home when a vehicle approached the location and several shots were fired, striking the teen.

Investigators say Blackmon was not the intended target.

Estell was one of two suspects facing a jury trial Monday morning, but he instead pleaded guilty to murder.

Estell was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder, 20 years for shooting into an occupied building and 10 years for shooting into an occupied vehicle, according to the district attorney’s office.

In a separate case, he was also sentenced to ten years after pleading guilty to burglary of a vehicle.

Those sentences run together.

The jury trial of co-defendant in the murder case, Kentrell Freeman, began Monday morning with opening statements.

FOX10 News will continue to monitor the outcome.

The other four defendants are Teriana Thompson, Ryan Kidd, Deontae Kimbrough and Sidney Collins.

Thompson, Kidd and Collins will appear in court in November.

Kimbrough’s trial is scheduled for February 2025.
