Missing child found in snowstorm after multi-agency effort in southern Colorado

EL PASO COUNTY, Colorado (KKTV) – A girl who went missing in the snow is recovering from cold-related injuries after a multi-agency effort to find her.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call at 10:30 p.m. Friday about an 8-year-old boy missing in the area of Soap Weed Drive and Mid Jones Road in eastern El Paso County. They said they discovered he was missing after his family’s vehicle got stuck in the snow. That’s when the family went out to look for her.

According to the 11 Breaking Weather crew, several inches of snow fell overnight while this search was underway.

Deputies said multiple agencies were called to the search, including Search and Rescue, the El Paso County Department of Transportation, the Colorado Springs, Ellicott, Peyton and Cimarron Hills Fire Departments, Ellicott School District 22 and the Fountain Police Department.

As they established a command post at Ellicott High School, the area experienced blizzard-like conditions, making the search difficult for officials. Snow plows were used to clear roads and allow emergency personnel to search the area.

Officers said the effort included an extensive ground search by CSFD and Fountain Police drones.

After seven hours, deputies said the girl was found alive on a nearby property.

“I thank my deputies, the El Paso County Search and Rescue team, and our partner agencies for their tremendous efforts in locating the missing child during some of the harshest weather conditions we have seen,” Sheriff Joe Roybal said in a statement. release. “This is a perfect example of how quickly and efficiently law enforcement and first responders in the Pikes Peak region (together) ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens. Thank you to everyone who defied the conditions and made sure this little girl was able to return safely to her family.”

After being exposed to the storm for that period of time, she was taken to the hospital to recover from cold-related injuries, but is expected to recover.
