Brothership runs on Unreal Engine, developed by Acquire – Nintendo Wire

Some lucky buyers have been able to get their hands on early copies of Mario & Luigi: Brothership, and it confirms a few details about the game that Nintendo hasn’t discussed. The biggest fact is that Brothership marks another major Nintendo release that uses Unreal Engine. While this wouldn’t normally be a problem, Nintendo likes to keep the details of the game’s development secret, but using Unreal requires a logo to be placed on the back of the box. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has ventured into Unreal either, with both Pikmin 4 and Princess Peach: Showtime! are two examples from 2024.

Another interesting fact is that the developer of Brothership is reportedly Acquirethe studio behind both Octopath Traveler titles. This would have been confirmed in the game’s end credits, and since Nintendo Wire doesn’t want to be immediately shut down by Nintendo ninjas, we won’t be showing any screenshots of that. With Brothership just days away, all of this information will become public knowledge in short order.

Personally, I don’t believe Nintendo’s use of the Unreal Engine signals a shift in the company’s design philosophy, but it’s interesting how this American-made game engine has slowly infiltrated the Japanese gaming industry. It could also give credence to the rumors that the Switch 2 will be made to take advantage of all the latest features of Unreal Engine 5, including ray-tracing, hardware lumens, and a bunch of other fancy terms that won’t mean anything to the average player. . Only time will tell.
