DETROIT – A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition and the 16-year-old who allegedly shot him is in custody following an incident Thursday that began as a fight between two young boys.

The ordeal began around 6 p.m. on Delaware Street when two children, ages 6 and 8, got into an argument.

While addressing the media about the shooting, Detroit Police Deputy Chief Charles Fitzgerald said police believe a 13-year-old boy broke up the fight, but the 8-year-old boy ran back to his house and brought a 14 year old family member. outside with him.

The 13- and 14-year-olds began exchanging words, Fitzgerald said, just as one of the mothers appeared along with her 16-year-old son.

Police say the 16-year-old began firing a gun, hitting the 14-year-old in the head, and also shot his mother in the arm when she tried to intervene.

“Right now, due to a silly fight between a 6-year-old and an 8-year-old, we have a 14-year-old who is in critical condition. “He’s in surgery now and our suspect’s mother was shot in the arm,” Fitzgerald said.

The suspected shooter then fled the scene, but ran past an undercover Detroit Police Department unit that was handling an entirely different matter. Those officers were able to take him into custody and the teen was taken into custody.

Police arrested another teenager at the scene, who picked up the gun allegedly used in the shooting and attempted to walk away from the scene with it.
