Ballot ‘curation’ process underway in Maricopa County; this is how it works

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — Across the state, including Maricopa County, several races are still too close to call. In addition to counting votes, election officials are also “curing” them.

If you opted for early voting, the solution is the process in which the county elections team allows voters to fix any issues with their signatures on the green affidavit envelopes they are given to submit their ballots.

If the electoral team finds inconsistencies, errors or lack of signature on the envelope, you will be given the opportunity to correct it.

If you need to cure your ticket:

  • The elections team will call, text, email, or mail you to notify you
  • You have 5 calendar days after the federal elections.
  • You have 3 calendar days after the local elections.

Gina Roberts of the Arizona Clean Elections Commission said curation is a crucial step in the election process and one of the main reasons verifying results takes time.

“A significant number of voters chose to keep their ballot and return it on Election Day. All of those hundreds, thousands of ballots have to go through processing to confirm ‘yes, this was an eligible voter’ and ‘yes, the ID matches the person who cast this vote,’” Roberts explained.

“The voter, again, has until November 10 by state law to correct his signature. “That means the soonest our state statutes allow counties to conduct a canvass of the election, and the canvass is the result of finalizing the election results, making them official,” he added.

If you are notified to correct your ballot, you are offered two ways to do so:

Heal by text:

  • Text2Cure (information on how to use this Text2Cure process will be provided). It involves receiving a link to a secure portal where you can validate your signature and verify your identity by uploading an image of your AZ driver’s license or AZ state ID.
  • “Check your status” through your personalized Voter Dashboard at BeBallotReady.Vote. If it appears on that page as “Disputed Signature”, details and a link to the Text2Cure process will be provided.

Heal by phone:

  • 602-506-1511 (The call center is ready during the election cycle to take your call and verify your identity over the phone using certain personally identifiable information contained in your voter registration.)

Roberts encourages voters to check the status of their votes at their county voting panels to make sure everything is in order. If not, Roberts said it’s important to correct it because numbers collected over the next few weeks will be included in the poll and final results.

“The authority for that jurisdiction, in this case at the county level, would be the board of supervisors. They meet at a public meeting. County election officials will present final tabulation results. At that time, the county board of supervisors will officially adopt the final election results,” he explained.

All 15 counties in the state must complete this process in order to submit it to the Secretary of State’s Office. From there, the state will gather, verify and publish the official count and results of this year’s races and measurements.
