Stockport taxi drivers demand barrier at station to stop ‘daily abuse’

“Every two days we receive from the police a reference number of crimes, damage to our cars and injuries,” said Tauqir Chaudhry, president of the association.

“People often park their vehicles at taxi ranks (on Station Road), at bus stops and in places where it is not allowed,” he added.

Mr Javed’s taxi drivers said they would be happy if barriers were installed on the road and also on the footpath so that customers can queue single file.

“Sometimes we’re about to get going and people try to come in and park next to us at the taxi rank,” he explained. “It’s very dangerous, we just want the problems to end.”

Waseem Saeed, a taxi driver for 14 years in Stockport, added: “Every driver here has been involved in an incident with other drivers, it happens every day.

“I’ve had it several times too. There have been physical fights. “If they put a camera here, people would get tickets and everything would stop.”

Stockport Council said it is reviewing the association’s suggestions on safety measures for taxi drivers on the road.
