Case of Bonham’s elementary meningococcal disease: The health department confirms that the case died last week

The Houston Health Department has released some new details after a case of meningococcal disease at Bonham Elementary.

According to the Department of Health, there was a case of the disease at Bonham Elementary and the case died last week.

Meningococcal disease is a serious illness caused by bacteria, but is less contagious than viruses such as the flu or the common cold.

According to the Center for Disease Control, it takes prolonged and close contact with an infected person’s respiratory tract to spread the bacteria. The most common symptoms of meningitis are fever, headache and stiff neck. The disease can be fatal.

The Houston Health Department previously said they will provide antibiotics to those at the school if the investigation determines it is necessary.

FOX 26 has reached out to the Houston Independent School District for further comment. We are waiting to hear back from them regarding this incident.
