Denis Villeneuve confirms he's writing Dune 3, and teases when it will be ready

Denis Villeneuve Dune films are perhaps some of the best science fiction films of all time. And given their massive success, fans were eagerly awaiting news of the third installment. Messiah. While it initially appeared that the acclaimed filmmaker would be taking a break from the property, he confirmed that he is in the writing process. And he also confirmed when the upcoming blockbuster is set.

While Villeneuve has been somewhat cryptic about it Dune 3he recently offered a long-awaited look behind the curtain. While talking to Deadline about the franchise, he confirmed that he was in the “writing zone,” and talked about mirroring the novel Messiah for its film adaptation. In the Arrival words of the filmmaker:

Just like Herbert did with Dune: Messiah, I think it’s a great idea to do something completely different. The story takes place twelve years after we left the characters at the end of part two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that even though it’s the same world, it’s a new movie with new circumstances.

Honestly, sign me up. The end of Dune: part two felt in many ways like a cliffhanger, with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides ultimately choosing the “dark side”, proclaiming himself as the true Muad’Dib and starting a prophesied holy war. That’s why fans are eager to know what happens next and how Zendaya’s Chani reacts.

Rather than directly following the events of Dune: part twothe third film will instead feature a time jump of over ten years. We will likely see the devastation that Paul’s life has brought to the world, presumably he will be a very different man from the one we followed in the first two films.

After Anya Taylor-Joy’s short scene in Dune 2fans are eager to see her character Alia, aka Paul’s little sister, in real life. Denis Villeneuve continues to cast Hollywood’s biggest names in his franchise, including Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler. The Dune: part two The cast list was stacked and one can only imagine who else would join in Messiah.

To be clear, there is no release date for this Dune: Messiahand we’ll probably have to wait a few years before it finally hits theaters. Luckily, the universe continues to expand thanks to the upcoming Max series Dune: Prophecy. Set 10,000 years before the events of the first film, Prophecy will follow as the Bene Gesserit is formed and begins to gain power. Fans assume that the show’s title will provide a connection to the prophecy set in the films surrounding Paul Atreides. But we’ll have to see how it all turns out.
