Man allegedly punched election judge in face after jumping to front of voting line, police say

ORLAND PARK, Ill. (Gray News) – An Illinois man was arrested after allegedly assaulting an election judge while waiting in line to vote.

At approximately 11 a.m. Sunday, police called the Orland Park Borough Office to report a man causing a disturbance in the voting line.

Police said Daniel Schmidt, 24, entered the building and passed many other voters waiting in line to enter the voting area. according to a press release.

An election judge stationed at the entrance told Schmidt to go to the back of the line and wait his turn, to which Schmidt allegedly refused.

At that point, another election judge was called to assist and Schmidt was again instructed to go to the back of the line.

Police said Schmidt tried to get past the judge but was detained. He then began shouting profanities and punched the judge, knocking off his glasses.

At that point, several other customers intervened and restrained Schmidt until officers arrived.

While under arrest, Schmidt also allegedly resisted.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on an elderly victim 60 years of age or older.
