Long lines and ‘baseless’ bomb threats to voting sites in AZ

PHOENIX — Election Day in Arizona is finally here! Polls officially opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m., with vote counting expected to begin after 8 p.m.

ABC15 is here to bring you the latest Election Day news overnight and in the days ahead as votes are counted in Arizona and across the country.

3:00 p.m.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrián Fontes said there is unsubstantiated reports of bomb threats at four specific locations in Navajo County.

“These are baseless bomb threats,” he said at an afternoon news conference. “We have no reason to believe that any voter or polling location is in danger.”

Fontes said he believes the threats came from a foreign enemy “namely Russia,” but he declined to elaborate, saying he had just been briefed on the information.

“We have no reason to believe anyone is in danger,” he said.

The Navajo Nation Speaker’s office tells ABC15 that the Navajo Nation is working closely with ASU Native Vote to try to file an extension request by 3 p.m.

We are seeing more polling places with long lines this afternoon as turnout across Arizona appears to be high.

We are receiving more reports of long lines at polling places in Maricopa County. The following video is from ASU.

Maricopa County election officials are seeing an increase in voters during lunchtime and some of the busiest places are college campuses: Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Fitness Center, Mesa Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College.

So far, more than 127,000 voters have registered.

The county projects up to 375,000 voters on Election Day.

Longer queues are expected from 4pm to 7pm.

Some voting centers in the Valley are seeing very long lines, but people are reminded that if they are in line, they will be able to vote.

The latest count on Maricopa County’s Election Day voter turnout:

12 p.m.

Maricopa County election officials this morning reported an average wait time of 2 minutes at voting centers. A “small handful of centers” have reporting lines of up to 30 minutes.

It is expected that by mid-afternoon there will be the shortest lines.

The highest demand is expected to be between 4 pm and 7 pm You can check wait times at locations.maricopa.vote.

Maricopa County has provided the first update on the number of voters who voted today so far.

Maricopa County is reporting high traffic at multiple voting sites across the Valley this morning, including:

  • Outdoor School
  • Civic Center Anthem
  • Chandler-Gilbert Community College
  • Desert Hills Community Church
  • Indian Bend Wash Visitor Center
  • Memorial Presbyterian Church
  • Paradise Valley Community College
  • surprise town hall
  • Tolleson Civic Center

Arizona Secretary of State Adrián Fontes has announced a press conference at 9 am to talk about how the electoral process is going so far.

7:20 a.m.

A viewer reported to ABC15 that there were delays this morning at the Aire Libre Elementary School voting site in north Phoenix.

The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office told ABC15 that a poll worker with the ballot initially locked himself outside the building and the issue is expected to be resolved shortly.

Some spectators in Mohave County initially reported problems when polls opened in Mohave County.

ABC15 reached out to the Mohave County Elections Department, who said all issues have been resolved and voting is proceeding normally.

The polls have officially opened in Arizona.
