Records show the All Blacks’ biggest rugby adversary is now Ireland

He All the black people-The rivalry with Ireland has become the greatest in the last decade due to New Zealand rugby, and perhaps the most important meeting in world sport.

From New Zealand’s perspective, no team has irritated the country like Ireland, with a ledger of wins and losses and disputes between players on the field spilling over into the media and adding fuel to the fire.

While New Zealand fans love to fawn over their traditional rivals, the Springboks, calling them “brother nations” and lathering each other with “respect”, the opposite is true of the Irish and their rapid rise that has overturned the applecart of the All Black.

Many New Zealanders are reluctant to acknowledge or give credit to Ireland’s greatness and cling to outdated views that they remain in the same category as Welsh and Scotland, European doormats that are there to be trampled by the black machine.

They just don’t like losing to the Irish. The one-off victory in Chicago in 2016 was supposed to be an aberration, and the retribution test in Dublin that year was supposed to prove it.

The aftermath of the 2016 rematch also marked a turning point in the shape of the game in general, with many of the tackles that night sparking the start of an offense. Legal tackle heights decreased and card penalties increased.

Sam Cane’s final World Cup tackle Jesse Kriel It would barely have been noticed in 2016, however, it was his sickening hit on Henshaw in that 2016 Test that set the path forward.

Again in 2018 Ireland created history by beating the All Blacks for the second time, this time it was Steve Hansen’s best team that was sent to Europe early to prepare for the performance.

Jacob Stockdale’s famous try was the catalyst for a 16-9 victory when New Zealand failed to score a try. Both fans and the New Zealand media could not find a valid explanation. The All Blacks had a real problem on their hands. If you fool me once, it’s your fault. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Consecutive world player of the year Beauden Barrett He was seeking three straight titles in 2018 after emerging from the 2015 World Cup as the game’s top superstar. The year-end tour tipped the balance and Johnny Sexton took the award over Barrett.

Ireland collapsed in 2019 and when the two teams met in the World Cup quarter-finals, an All Black victory seemed inevitable. They punished Ireland 46-14 for a sweet revenge. But again, soon after Ireland showed that the “Aura” of the All Black no longer mattered to them.

When Ian Foster’s batch showed up in 2021, they suffered another loss, 29-20. The image of the expatriate winger James Lowe The famous shout over an All Blacks ruck after winning a penalty is etched in the memories of New Zealand fans.

Once again there was a response from the other side. The All Blacks were happy after a 42-19 victory in the first test at Eden Park in 2022. Three tries in the space of 10 minutes after Johnny Sexton’s forced exit buried the visitors at half-time.

Maybe they thought they would end the series and send Ireland on their way. But the most turbulent moment of Ian Foster’s reign was about to begin when Ireland rallied to send the All Blacks into a tailspin.

Substitution debacles, multiple cards, including a red card for the reserve prop Angus Ta’avao derailed the local team in the Dunedin test. Ireland had scored the opening try again within five minutes and looked to be the better team with Sexton back on the field. O’Mahoney said Cane was a “Damn McCaw” towards the end.

The full-time celebrations were eye-opening. Many teams act as if they have won a World Cup after beating the All Blacks. Argentina has done it several times in recent years, only to be demolished a week later.

The Irish players barely acknowledged the victory, they raised their arms but it was a very measured response, understanding that the job was only half done. They smelled blood in the water.

The All Blacks were totally embarrassed in the third and final test, losing a historic series at home. The fallout was chaotic, with two assistant coaches fired and Foster’s job put at risk.

The pain and shame of the series defeat left a lot of pent-up emotion in the All Blacks. They retreated into their shells, resentful of the media and angry at the criticism. It left a lot of resentment on his shoulder.

However, through the storm it also brought about positive change. Joe Schmidt arrived with a prominent role as assistant coach. The All Blacks cleaned up their shapes and patterns and began to look like a well-oiled machine. They finished 2022 with an undefeated streak of seven games in a row. That streak would extend to 11 as the All Blacks opened 2023 with dominant dominance. rugby championship qualification.

Players and coaches have since admitted that they wanted to see Ireland in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. After losing against France on opening night and after Ireland defeated South Africa, they got their wish.

2023 Rugby World Cup The quarterfinals were an all-time great match, decided by the best margin. Jordie Barrett’s miracle tackle on reserve hooker Ronan Kelleher the decisive moment.

All the pain of the 2022 series defeat was bottled up and delivered to Ireland that night, dealing an emotionally crushing blow to the No. 1-ranked team that reeled off 17 straight wins. Brodie Retallick was happy to serve O’Mahoney a sleigh and Rieko Ioane’s infamous farewell to Johnny Sexton is now public.

This modern rivalry has been built on the foundation of causing each other crushing emotional pain, which with each step has become greater and greater. No team has tarnished the All Blacks’ reputation as a dominant power like Ireland. The All Blacks have kept Ireland’s curse intact in the quarter-finals.

Since the big victory in 2016, the balance is 5-4 in favor of Ireland. For any opposition against the All Blacks, that is historically exceptional.

The Springboks’ losses are accepted by the public. losses to Australia They are uncommon and quite rare. But losses to Ireland, as often as they have come, have been a bitter pill to swallow. The All Blacks were 27-1-0 over Ireland since 1905, and have now become their biggest rugby adversary.

Over the same period since Chicago’s 2016 loss, the All Blacks have a 9-1-7 winning record over South Africa despite losing the last four in a row. Ireland is the only team the All Blacks have a losing record against since winning their third Rugby World Cup title.

And the recent history of this rivalry suggests that revenge is in store for last year’s painful quarter-final exit.
