What Matthew Boyd said after the Guardians won ALCS Game 3

Q. Matthew, I don’t know where you were in the ninth inning, but can you tell us how you view Noel’s home run and what it means to you?

MATTHEW BOYD: Yeah, I mean, Jhonkensy is great, man. Our group is resilient. We’ve had this next-man-up mentality all year long.

You just knew something good was going to happen. Those guys coming to the plate. Man, this isn’t the first time he’s come through in a big moment like this. So happy for him. It was great.

Q. Can you explain the wave of emotion from Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge’s home runs to (indiscernible)?

MATTHEW BOYD: Yeah, a ton. I don’t know if there are many words for it, but I think this is postseason baseball, man. Those guys are a good team.

Obviously that guy is going to be the MVP right there. He took one of the guys who will appear for Cy Young on a great field. That was a collision, and as we moved forward with Lane and David and Jonko, just guys doing it over and over again, there were a lot of emotions.

But I think this game is who we are, right? You go back and you look and you think about some of those key plays, what Giménez did on that play to save – essentially putting a guy on third base, keeping him at second, getting an out there was more than anything also great.

That whole game was who we are as a ball club. That’s Guards baseball.

Q. How about your pitching performance tonight? Would you probably rate that as one of your best?

MATTHEW BOYD: I mean, I might want to eliminate some of those walks. The walk to Volpe, who mainly came by to score. But Hedgy did a great job there. He was money, he mixed pitches. He’s so solid. He’s so important to this ball club, and then Bo picked up where he left off when Bo came into the game, and they did a great job there.

Q. I think you retired 9 of the last 10 batters you faced, and 7 of them on ground balls. What was so effective for you in getting the ground ball out?

MATTHEW BOYD: Changing speeds. I think we have ground balls on a changeup, curve ball slider and a heater. It was just pitching. The batting – Hedgy is doing great there. We were just reading swings, and he knew what was good, and that was a great credit to him.

Q. Now three postseasons start for you and I think it’s easier to do something once you’ve done it a few times. Is it something to be in this moment, in a game of this magnitude, and know that your teammates are trusting you with the ball in a game where you have to pin? Are things getting more comfortable for you at this point?

MATTHEW BOYD: I mean, I don’t know if comfort is the right word, but I can’t get enough of it. I think I can speak for all 26 guys there because we all feel the same way. It’s put into your vein, something like that. It’s great. Whatever role we are asked to play, we do it to get a W.

Q. It was clearly a tough evening for Emmanuel Clase. Can you talk about how the team tried to pick him up after a frustrating outing for him?

MATTHEW BOYD: Our baseball club is next. That guy is a world closer. He has the ball every time the game is on the line, and I’m going to take it from whoever is in the penalty area every time. Our entire club thinks the same. That guy is great.
