Hattiesburg City Council to review drone purchase

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Hattiesburg leaders are set to review proposals to purchase drones for the city’s police department.

Several public meetings were held earlier this year to discuss the correct way to use the technology.

While some people agreed, others raised privacy concerns.

HPD Chief Hardy Sims said the department has taken steps to ensure officers use drones as safely as possible.

“We understand there were some privacy concerns,” Sims said. “We have drafted policies, along with a citizen review board. They have reviewed that policy.

“Once we have the drones in place, we will implement the policy and make the program work.”

Council members will vote on the matter at Tuesday’s meeting.

If approved, Sims expects the drones to be available in early 2025.

Sims added that the first game should cost around $50,000.
