Fans are outraged after another brutal call from NHL officials.

I have to be honest, I no longer have a clue what the National Hockey League considers goalie interference. There appears to be as much inconsistency when it comes to the application of the goalie interference rule as there is when it comes to fines and suspensions from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

Hockey fans, especially those located in the city of Winnipeg, were stunned on Sunday when a seemingly obvious challenge by Winnipeg Jets head coach Scott Arniel failed despite what appeared to be clear evidence of goaltender interference. .

Trouble would arise during the first period of Sunday’s game between the aforementioned Jets and Tampa Bay Lightning when Lightning forward Conor Geekie crashed in the box in an attempt to score. The puck was loose in the box and Geekie was trying to bat at it, but after missing the puck he initially appeared to clearly push Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck deep into his own net using his stick to poke Hellebuyck’s right pad.

You can see a replay of the incident in question just below:

As expected in a situation like this, the play was quickly questioned by Jets head coach Scott Arniel, but the Jets did not get the result they hoped for. After reviewing the play, the referees on the ice would return and declare that they had seen no goalie interference on the play, calling it a good goal.

Arniel expressed his disbelief at the call on the ice and did so again after the game’s conclusion when asked about the challenge.

“We were,” Arniel said when asked if he was surprised by the NHL’s decision.

Although Arniel stopped short of criticizing the NHL and its officials, he made it clear that he felt his team had made the right decision in issuing the challenge and that he would do it again if they found themselves in a similar scenario.

“We would call him all day, challenge him every time,” the Jets head coach added.

I don’t know what the NHL saw in the play that made them rule the way they did, and judging by the fan reaction, it seems like no one else does either.
