Georgia Republicans, Trump Campaign File Lawsuit to Stop Counties from ‘Unlawfully Accepting’ Early Voting Ballots

Georgia Republicans and former President Trump’s campaign say they continue to take legal action against “coordinated efforts” by Democratic-majority counties to accept ballots after the early voting period term.

A declaration of the Georgia Republican Party, which was obtained by FOX Business on Sunday, details the party’s latest efforts to prevent counties from counting hand-delivered ballots over the weekend.

The lawsuit names seven counties: Clayton County, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Fulton, Chatham and Athens-Clarke. Fulton County It is home to the state capital, Atlanta.

In the letter, Chairman Josh McKoon claimed that these counties were “illegally accepting ballots this weekend AFTER the end of early voting on Friday.”

“The Georgia Republican Party, along with the RNC, have filed a lawsuit in federal court to stop the counting of these votes,” McKoon wrote. “At a minimum, we want to sequester ballots that were submitted without proper oversight by our election observers.”

“In addition, we have asked the Georgia Secretary of State and Attorney General to get involved in resolving this matter and finding answers to the burning questions we all have,” he added.

McKoon said the GOP intends to uncover how a 501c3 organization “knew to inform voters within 15 minutes of early voting closing that six Democratic(ic) counties would extend their weekend hours.”

“Why didn’t these six counties inform the state board of elections, their county board of elections, the Secretary of State or their local governments about their plans to essentially extend early voting?” the letter asked. “Who gave the order to Fulton and Chatham County officials to prohibit poll watchers from monitoring the process? Why did they do this?”

McKoon concluded the update by urging Georgia Republicans to “keep their foot on the gas.”

“We will keep the public informed throughout the process,” the Republican said. “However, this does not change our overall mission. We MUST keep our foot on the accelerator and go to voters on Tuesday like our lives depend on it. Because they do.”

The Trump campaign issued a statement Sunday identifying itself as one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

“At the last minute, several heavily Democratic counties announced they would open their offices over the weekend to receive mail-in ballots,” the campaign said in a statement. “This is illegal, so we immediately filed suit in state court. In a victory for election integrity, counties backed away from their plans to keep drop boxes open over the weekend, but we continue to fight against the illegal reopening of the centers in the state and federal court.”

“This is a clear and partisan violation of the law intended to boost Democratic efforts in Georgia,” the campaign statement added. “With just two days until our country’s most important election, it is critical that officials follow the law and conduct elections fairly and transparently.”

The new legal action comes a day after a similar lawsuit filed by Republicans was thrown out. On Saturday, a Fulton County judge dismissed a lawsuit over normally closed offices that allowed voters to drop off their ballots over the weekend.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kevin Farmer had rejected all arguments made by Republican attorney Alex Kaufman, who asserted that absentee ballots should not be delivered or accepted in person after the early voting period ends.

“I believe it is not a violation of those two sections of the code for a voter to personally return absentee ballots,” the judge said.
