Trump claims to be ‘father of IVF’ at all-women campaign stop

WASHINGTON: Donald Trump tried to portray himself as the ‘father of IVF’ on Wednesday (Oct 16) when he told an all-female audience during an election campaign that he supported a fertility treatment that Democrats say has been compromised.

The Republican nominee did not explain what he meant, but his comments were the latest in a series of conflicting positions he has taken on reproductive rights, a major weakness in his bid for the White House.

“I want to talk about IVF. I am the father of IVF, so I want to hear this question,” Trump told Fox News in the closely watched swing state of Georgia when the topic turned to in vitro fertilization.

“We are really the party for IVF. We want fertilization, and it is all the way, and the Democrats tried to attack us on it and we are even more into IVF than they are.”

In the run-up to the Nov. 5 vote, Trump and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris have gone beyond their traditional support to woo undecided voters who don’t consume traditional media.
