Two teenagers die in Riverside fire and another is seriously injured

Two teenagers were killed and another was seriously injured after an early morning crash in Riverside on Saturday, after police say the driver ran a red light.

It happened shortly before 6 a.m. near the intersection of Wood Road and Van Buren Boulevard. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found one of the cars involved in the accident on fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, officials found two people dead, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old girl. Another 17-year-old, who police said was sitting in the back seat during the crash, was seriously injured. Paramedics took him to the hospital.

Officials investigating the crash said the car the teens were traveling in was “traveling north on Wood Road at a high rate of speed” when the driver ran the red light at the intersection. A driver of a Scion was driving on Van Buren when his car collided with the teens’ car, causing his car to crash into a light pole, a power pole and a tree before it caught fire.

The driver of the Scion was not injured in the accident. Police said they are cooperating with investigators.

Police have not identified the two teenagers who died in the crash because authorities have not notified their families. Investigators said drugs and alcohol are suspected to have played a role in the crash.
