Frost Watch for Inland SLO County, High Wind Warning for Santa Barbara County

Weather headlines:

-Large systems passing over the western United States will bring multiple bouts of strong to damaging winds and dangerous fire weather conditions to parts of California over the next few days.

-The forecast will remain mostly dry for the next week.

Detailed forecast:

Significant jet energy is spreading across the back of an upper trough moving slowly eastward over the Great Basin early this weekend.

A jet streak will enter the base of the trough Saturday night and Sunday over Arizona, leaving Southern California with extensive surface ridge formation from California’s Central Valley to the Great Central Basin.

Strong upper-level support and offshore pressure gradients on Sunday will support damaging wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph from the northwest northward from the I-5 corridor through the Ventura County mountains to the interior of Santa Barbara County and eastern Santa Barbara. Ynez Range this afternoon through Sunday afternoon.

As a result, a high wind warning was issued for Santa Barbara County until 6 p.m. Sunday.

On Sunday, the eastward movement of the surface ridge across the central Great Basin will turn more strongly offshore.

In turn, winds will turn toward the northeast, with the strongest winds concentrated in areas prone to Santa Ana winds.

Downhill drying in this pattern will combine with strong, damaging winds to produce critical fire weather conditions.

Low to mid-level winds are forecast to weaken later Monday into Tuesday.

Minimal day-to-day temperature changes are expected, with a slight warming trend during the early parts of next week.

High temperatures for Tuesday should be around 70 degrees in most areas.

Along with the aforementioned expansion of surface ridges amid the drying deep layer profile, extensive nocturnal radiation cooling will allow Sunday night’s low temperatures to reach the 30-32°F range, ensuring a freeze watch for the southern Salinas Valley, the interior valleys of San Luis Obispo County and the Antelope Valley.

Otherwise, the strong drying caused by the subsidence will prevent the formation of precipitation.
