IND vs NZ: Shubman Gill misses out on a hundred, crosses 800 Tests in 2024

Shubman Gill would agonizingly miss out on a well-deserved hundred when the Indian batsman was dismissed for 90 on Saturday, November 2. Gill, however, would surpass the 800-run mark for the calendar year in Tests with his knock at the Wankhede Stadium.

Gill came in to bat in the seventh over. after Matt Henry sacked Rohit Sharma. He started cautiously but soon found his rhythm and formed a 50-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, he could only watch as India’s stable stand of 78 for 1 turned precarious to 84 for 4 in just nine balls at the end of Day 1. With Rishabh Pant at the other end, Gill was set to play a crucial role in India’s recovery. on day 2.

The next morning, Pant scored three first boundaries off Ajaz Patel, while Gill, who resumed play in the 31st over, maintained his composure. His first boundary was against Ajaz, but he kept his aggression in check. At one point, however, he attempted to break free by going down the track against Glenn Phillips, only to fail. Mark Chapman looked set to catch it, but ended up dropping it, with Gill on 45.

Gill then calmly reached his half-century, his seventh in Tests and his first significant score since the Chennai Test against Bangladesh. Once Pant was dismissed for 60, Gill would ensure that India reached Lunch unscathed at 195 for 5.

The star batsman would restart after the break a little timidly and dismissed a dangerous Ajaz Patel. Gill would also survive a scare in Ajaz’s next match as he went for a quick single. The star batsman started losing partners at the other end as Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan left quickly after the lunch break.

Gill would change gears a bit at this point and hit 2 boundaries from Phillips to race towards the 80. However, he held firm in defense when required as the ball did some damage outside Wankhede’s court.

While he would be patient and try to play Ajaz, the left-arm spinner would have the last laugh and dismiss the star batsman when Daryl Mitchell took a good catch in the slips. Gill scored 90 off 146 balls with 7 boundaries and six to his name.

Gill currently has 805 runs to his name this year in 10 Tests at an average of 53.66.
